Abstract:This paper studies the impact of trade in environmentally sound technologies (ESTs) on the pollution level in China. Different from traditional literature on trade and environment which mainly focuses on the effect of export, we examine the environmental effect of China’s import on ESTs. Using the United Nations Broad Economic Classification (BEC) system, we classify ESTs into two basic categories: intermediate inputs and final goods, and we show that there are heterogeneous effects of import in ESTs by type of goods and trade modes with the city-level evidence over the period of 2004-2013 in China.
